Training is surprisingly on of the most neglected areas in Retailing, especially ongoing training. When businesses start up or enter a new phase training will be in the program however once operational life takes over and training can be neglected even for new starts.
Refreshment training programs can bring new focus and new momentum to a business and can import new ideas and a fresh perspective.
Retail is about sales, yet time and time again we find shop staffs that have had no formal sales training and have no understanding of how to structure a sale.
Retail Gem
Each week we publish a little gem of detail from our training programs. Check them regularly, they build in to a catalogue of essential items for the retail professional. A lot of little gems become a treasure trove.
Gem Number One.
Each and every morning go outside and view your store from at least 20mtrs. Now look at your store with a customer’s eye. Are the windows clean? Is the shop front and sign clean? Are all the bulbs working? Is all the POS material still current? Are the window displays strong? Be critical. Your customers will be, and if you fail the test they will vote by walking on.
I recently went to a large supermarket with my wife. There it was in all its glory a massive investment and commitment by the company. Yet as I looked at the store name I noticed large weeds were growing in front of the store sign and along the roof line. Not the impression intended by the brand developers. The staff car park was at the front so each member must have walked by each day going in to work. They just did not have their customer’s eyes in.
Gem Number Two
Set a scorching pace. The first sixty minutes of the day are the most important and the pace set then carries forward throughout the day. Get off to a slow start and you will never reach maximum potential. Slow start means slow day. Organise and program the first hour for yourself and staff. Make sure you hit the ground running.
