The Retailer Group is a strategic partner with NUS Services. We have extensive experience in university retail and hospitality, operating in many sites across the UK. Most recently we completed a successful refit of an under-utilised space at UCL SU. The new area is attracting high footfall and the sales results are significantly ahead of expectations.

During 2018-2019, we were selected to lead a three-site pilot with the clear objective of improving operational processes and procedures. Our experience in the sector allowed us to hit the ground running and deliver first-rate results.

A case study - Transforming Student Union Retail

We were asked to

Enhance and develop the retail operation in three pilot sites, improving efficiencies of the team and general operations, and significantly improving sales and profits.

Our approach

We developed the project plan by bringing together key supplier stakeholders to support the delivery of the overall project objectives and outline ‘the routes’ to transform SU Retail. We set up eight project work streams and constructed a detailed tasks list with 45 recommendations overall.

Outputs

  • Considerable headway has been made in the pilot stores with the introduction of an API link, Self-Serve Tills and improved visual standards.
  • From an operational perspective, new ways of working are also beginning to make a tangible difference.
  • The automation of the order process is a significant step forward.
  • The store teams have fully engaged in the pilot project and recognise the benefits of simplifying processes and focusing on the KPIs highlighted in a new dashboard.
